We can also use social networks such as YouTube, FaceBook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest to name only the most famous. Another way to present the story in pictures will be the publication in the form of a photo book. Several types of books are now available to the general public.

What about the narrative photography definition? Discussing the various meanings of photography pictures that tell a story can pass for one of those semantics exercises that the photography world tends to disparage. Exercises that can certainly be inane and tedious — when in fact they are. This is not the case here. Too often, photographers fail to see the difference between, say, story and narrative, confusing one with the other. And that’s when things get complicated.

Let’s talk about photography story ideas and the best examples of this genre. As Sundberg points out, the visual arts, and photography that tells a story in particular, use it in more than one way. To begin with, there is what is known in photography as narrative staging: images purposely created (staged) to respond to a narrative idea, as in Gregory Crewdson’s work. Like all photography, narrative photography examples represent an event. Unlike most other photographs, however, these are produced in such a way as to evoke a specific story with which we are all familiar (thus, it seems impossible to create a narrative staging in photography around a story that no one has ever heard of, no matter how important. Kaspar Hauser would have been quite baffled by Crewdson’s work).

The photographer’s latest work, an example of photography storytelling, Cathedral of the Pines, it’s about the rather Lynchian feel of the psychological comfort and boredom of American life (a rather hackneyed theme today, it must be said, but that’s another matter): we don’t know why all these people look the way they do, but we all have a little idea about it, the details of which may vary widely from person to person. An event is represented, and that event evokes the larger story from which it is drawn. In Sundberg’s words, this emotional photography that tells a story is considered narrative because they recall a story by association. This is interesting because it means that it is up to the creator of such a work to summon the right association (otherwise it cannot be called a narrative setting).

We all know (or think we know) what story-based photography is. And the narration is the same, right? The story told in a photo book is not the same as the book itself, nor is the way the story is told. What we tend to notice is that many photographers use the word “narrative” as a synonym for “story”, when what they mean is the way the story is told. And this is where the understanding of the word “narrative photography” comes in.
