The famous story about the bakery starts from the end of the 19th century, with surprisingly juicy information. The industrial zone along Kirillovskaya Street was then extended to new and new sections. It must be admitted that at one time those who exploited Kirillovskaya considered non-compliance with elementary environmental requirements to be the norm. In particular, in 1894, the city sanitary doctor brought to justice the German Johann Mentzer, the owner of a yeast distillery (later - a bakery shop at 65 Frunze Street). It turned out that "Herr Menzer had accumulated a huge amount of rotted mash, which gives out an impossible stench, it was covered with earth, and also several pounds of carbolic acid were poured to reduce the stench." The journalist of the local press then had to state: “In general, the factories on Kirillovskaya Street in sanitary terms represent a great evil in Kyiv. Most factories do not take their sewage anywhere, but dump it directly onto the city meadow, from where sewage from various ditches and streams enters Pochaina and finally into the Dnieper.
