Portrait sculpture has its traditions dating back to Ancient Egypt and Antiquity. A popular form of embodiment of such a sculpture is a portrait bust. One of the most famous and recognizable artefacts of art is a bust of the Egyptian queen Nefertiti, dated around 1350 BC. It is stucco-coated limestone covered with a gypsum-anhydrite mixture for strengthening and painted in six different colors. The Romans achieved special skill in performing sculptural portraits. The material for them was, for the most part, marble. Such sculptural portraits were a privilege of representatives of the elite, a sign of social status. The appearance of many emperors was preserved thanks to fixation in sculpture. Among them are portraits of Marcus Aurelius, Caligula, Julius Caesar, Constantine the Great and others.

Over time, portrait sculpture has become more accessible and diverse. Today, there are many techniques and technologies that sculptors incorporate in their works. Portraits are made in metal or a piece of stone, but the cheapest and most accessible is plaster. Often on sale you can find busts of famous personalities, such as Margaret Thatcher or Napoleon Bonaparte, or more classic ones that imitate the antique style. Modern sculptors experiment with forms, artistic solutions, or even materials, so their works can look unusual and original. Computer technologies have opened completely new possibilities in the production of a portrait sculpture: thanks to the program, you can literally print it on a 3D printer, having imputed the necessary parameters. This method is widely used by scientists for reconstruction.
