Photos of architecture combine art, design and precise calculations. Numerous photos of various buildings or apartments that can be found on real estate sites are not professional architectural photography at all. Architectural photo gravitates toward aesthetics rather than utilitarianism. It is a space where conceptual solutions, the architect’s idea and the photographer’s personal vision, his feelings or impressions intersect.

How to photograph architecture?

Before picking up the camera, you need to decide on the main thing: for what purpose will the photo be taken? What kind of story will stand behind it? Such a practice is not building photography, which has its own distinct function and application. For a satisfactory result, the photographer should conduct a kind of research on the object of his shooting, sort of get to know it. Selection of the necessary camera or lens for the photographic objective, setting of light, perspective, clarity and distance − all these technical details are necessary to enhance the effect, to convey the central idea of the photographer.

The famous architectural photographer Julius Shulman (1910-2009) belongs to the true legends of this genre. The photo “Case Study House #22, Los Angeles, 1960. Pierre Koenig, Architect” is considered his most famous work. Lucien Hervé (1910-2007), Ezra Stoller (1915-2004), and John Margolis (1940-2016) are also famous representatives of architectural photography.
