Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, requested an audience with these chieftains of the Jews and basely offered to betray his Lord into their hands.d Overpowered by the impulse of a diabolical avarice, which, however, was probably but an element Of secondary importance in the true motive of his perfidious treachery, he agreed to sell his Master for money, and haggled with the priestly buyers over the price of the Saviour's blood. “What do you want to give me?”—he asked them—“and they assigned him thirty pieces of silver.”e This sum, whose approximate value is seventeen dollars. This inspired work reflects the treacherous character of Judas. It was sought to implement these emissions in the work, with figurative influences on the viewer, and with distortion of the perspective of Judas face.
