Crafted in 2022 by Michael Lawrence, this 'Photo-Graphic' represents a unique fusion of photography and fine art. Within a dance of light and irregular forms, the featureless silhouettes of a man, a woman and a child suggest the fragility of life and intent. Inspired by a line in 'Dante’s Inferno' and the twin concepts of chance and alternatives (which Lawrence has written about in his novel The Rainey Seasons, 2024), the image invites us to consider the myriad paths that might develop or unfold from the tiniest accident or the most casual of choices. Artist’s Note. ‘Photo-Graphic’ is a term I have coined for a kind of image that starts out as a straight photograph but is then subjected to alterations that involve pen or brush work, and/or the use of raster graphics software. I initially trained as a graphic designer in a London studio, and from there morphed into a photographer, working for national newspapers, advertising agencies and publishers, photographing politicians, pop stars, fashion models and many other things and people besides. I also spent some time working as an experimental photographic printer and silkscreen printer, and along the way set about exploring ways of fusing various things that I had learnt, taking photographs in a rather unorthodox way, with specially-adapted lenses, which I then further distorted or remodelled, calling the end results of such manipulation ‘Photo-Graphics’. I am constantly experimenting, never knowing at the start of any given day what I will have come up with by the end of it. That makes life quite exciting. I’ll be offering some of my images as limited-edition prints here on Jose Art Gallery. Most of them have never been seen before, anywhere.
