David Karapetian

The creative path of David Karapetyan (b. 1986, Yerevan) is a consistent exploration of the metaphysics of space. A genetic connection to the Armenian art school (the artist's grandfather was a Honored Artist of the USSR) and training under his direct student, Martiros Saryan, shaped the artist's rare sense of coloristic discipline and laconicism. David's architectural training has left a defining imprint on his visual language: he doesn't simply paint, he constructs worlds. Karapetyan's unique signature style is built on a meticulous approach to material. Using the technique of classical multi-layered glazing, the artist achieves a unique depth and purity of color, creating the effect of a soft, inner glow on the canvas. In his works, objects, figures, and architectural elements are stripped of their everyday context—they become symbolic objects, arranged in space with mathematical precision and poetic flair. Developing the ideas of magical realism, Karapetyan works at the intersection of the visible and the imaginary. His canvases are meditative pauses, where the impeccability of form and subtle tonal transitions create an atmosphere of "quiet presence." The artist consciously avoids excess, focusing on the dialogue between the inner state and the open horizon. This is an art of intellectual contemplation, where the superficial laconicism of the composition conceals a multilayered philosophical subtext, consonant with the explorations of the great masters of 20th-century metaphysical painting.
