Boris and Gleb are one of the first saints canonized by the church, the youngest sons of Volodymyr Sviatoslavych. Shortly after their father's death in 1015, they were both killed, according to the chronicle, by their older brother Sviatopolk. Boris died on the Alta River on July 24, and Gleb died on September 5 near Smolensk. As a result of the four-year war, Sviatopolk was defeated by his younger brother Yaroslav the Wise.
