The painting is based on the poem “Ruslan and Lyudmila” by Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin. The events of the poem are preceded by an introduction in which the magical land of Lukomorye is described. There, from the learned cat, the author and the mermaid heard this fairy tale. The main characters of the picture are a Slavic mermaid and a “scientist” cat, and a goblin is wandering somewhere. According to Slavic beliefs, mermaids live in the forest on tall trees, oak or linden. Mermaids in Slavic mythology are not sea half-maidens, half-fish, but ordinary women with legs, without any tails. They have an attractive appearance. They look like girls and women with flowing blond hair and wreaths on their heads. Mermaids are considered the patroness of fertility. Mermaids are also especially active on the night of Ivan Kupala from July 6 to 7.
