Born in Portonovo (Pontevedra – Spain), he studied drawing, painting and sculpture at the Labor University of Vigo, where he had Luis Torras and Camilo Nogueira as teachers. In 1967, the Provincial Council of Pontevedra granted him a pension for painting studies, with which he traveled to Madrid. There he took two postgraduate courses at the Royal Academy of San Fernando, and studied figure at the Círculo de Bellas Artes. During his stay in Madrid Manuel U. Lima comes into contact with the publishing world, where he collaborates as an illustrator of children's literature, an activity that he continues to share with painting. He has illustrated books for the best-known Spanish publishers, including Anaya, Edelvives, EDEBÉ, SM, etc.
