Description of the Artwork “Irises from Kono”

In Greek mythology, Iris was both, a goddess of the rainbow and a divine messenger. She created a rainbow to ride on it so as to get fr om one place to another. And at the spot where the rainbow touched the ground a new bunch of irises would start to grow. In Croatian this flower is called perunika, the name deriving from the name of the supreme old-Slavic deity, the God of thunder Perun - Perunika was his wife. It is said that wh ere Perun struck with his thunderbolt, a perunika – an iris would spring. Well..., that story is hardly believable and totally politically incorrect. To begin with, it seems to me that this fellow tried to strike his wife with lightning. And then the place he struck would turned blue-violet. Hmh, there could be another explanation; Perun struck, but his wife responded to his strike with beautiful flowers. It is all very unconvincing and odd. Anyway, the irises here grow in our garden, and no one recalls any thunder strikes. Therefore I conclude, the Greek goddess has visited us once upon a time, carrying some important messages, because irises flourish like crazy.
