Part of the artist's "Tender Flesh" series this work focuses on the inner chaos and after math felt by children of war-torn countries and art as a means of hope and healing. Growing up in New York City, I was exposed to the urban colors and imagery of the city. My surroundings and a fascination with the abstract expressionism movement played a major role in me becoming an artist. I approach the surface as an art journal page in which I fuse semi-abstract imagery, lines, scribbles and abstract text applied with palette knives and acrylic markers. My work can reference current events, present day personal experiences, visual childhood anecdotes and family relationships in life and literature. Bright colors and raw textures are an essential element in of my work, resulting in frenetic paintings with energetic abstractions bursting with color and emotionally charged imagery.
Franck de las Mercedes is an artist living and working in Washington Heights, New York City. Franck's experience as a child in war-torn Nicaragua, the visual clash of New York’s graffiti and an interest in the abstract expressionism movement played a major role in de las Mercedes becoming a visual artist. With a self-obtained education at the Mid-Manhattan Public Library, Franck’s work integrates aspects of photography, drawing, journal entries and text art, in frenetic paintings with energetic abstractions bursting with color. In 2006, de las Mercedes achieved international acclaim with his conceptual art project “The Priority Boxes" or Peace Boxes; an ongoing public project conceived as a way to promote peace and bring contemporary art to a broader audience. FdlM is the recipient of an “Outstanding Latino” award, the “Hearing Our Voices” award and is profiled in the book titled “Learning from Latino Role Models: Inspire Students through Biographies, Instructional Activities, and Creative Assignments” by David Campos (Rowman & Littlefield Publishers).
