Description of the Artwork “Way to Myself”

“I was born in the city of São Paulo in a family that art is the way of life, I grew up in a sculpture studio and I was always present with my father Álvaro Franklin. I have many memories of this period, visits to art galleries, many conversations with artists, and my father producing his works in stone, from the prototype to the end. I have always observed the real nature of things, the objects around me, I have always been used to seeing things, from an analytical point of view. I developed this philosophical thinking with the experience of my childhood. My works show my fascination with colors and chemical mixtures that we can obtain with the different types of paints and materials. I build my work in layers like a “mason” plastering a wall. Each painting is a vestige of some actions, which in reality is my “negotiation” between the questioning that is in the brain and the matter. These facts create a certain expression, which ends up generating a new distressing state: “What can I do? What do I look for in my intellect? ” There are no plausible justifications for the interior and I also cannot value the idea much more than the artistic project itself, for this reason, the works individually do not have titles, I propose that we should analyze the results that are the counter-reaction of the matter, without failing to notice that each job is a page of my search for self-knowledge. I believe that a lot of wasting ink, a lot of thinking, maybe in the end I will be able to find a path that is the essence with regard to my artistic work. ”

About the artist

Saul Franklin is a Brazilian Visual Artist living in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He graduated in Visual Arts at Anhanguera University Center, started his trajectory at Sculptor Alvaro Franklin's Atelier as an assistant in the execution of several sculptural projects, during this period he also received specialization courses in modeling, sculpture and painting. And from 2021 he took over the art atelier left by his father, dedicating himself exclusively to his artistic production. He has participated in group exhibitions and art salons, and has works in private collections in several states of Brazil and the United States. Artist Statement Being a contemporary artist opens up possibilities for expression in many different mediums, but I feel most comfortable expressing myself through sculpture and painting. My work as a visual artist presents my fascination with objects, colors, and the chemical mixtures we can obtain with various types of materials. I fell in love with the abstract in my childhood, given my upbringing with my father. I never felt trapped and/or obliged to respect colors or stereotyped shapes. At first it was a game in my father's studio, which became my lifelong pursuit. I did not have a traumatic childhood, on the contrary, mine was inspiring and became my compass! I have always observed the real nature of things, of the objects around me. And so I have always sought new ways of doing things. In my artistic practices I seek to present reflections and tests obtained from the abstractions of nature around me and within me. Inspired by Plato's phrase "try to move the world - the first step will be to move yourself", I believe that my purpose is to move to my inner self, to know myself and to believe that if I advance one centimeter with each artistic practice, I will already be better than yesterday. My works are traces of my search and if I can move forward I will be able to move other people.
