The Personification of Passionate Love, the hart’s-tongue (a fern with curative properties) transcends into the form of the Dragobete on Feb. 24, as a symbol of the pure love of the youth, associated by the Romanians with the chirping and mating of the birds of the forest whose patron is, also called the Head of Spring. The Dragobete is also associated with the Cupid God – from Roman mythology, with Eros, from the Greek one. The Dragobete announces a new, fruitful year, with the renewal of the flesh, with a spring that is meant to be suited to sowing. An excellent feast of fertility, being the birthday of both the birds, which make new nests or repair old ones and humans. The boys try to enter the graces of the girls they admire on this day, from which the expression “Dragobete kisses the girls” derives.
