Der Kindheitsname von Gautama Buddha war Siddhartha. Er wurde 563 v. Chr. geboren. Der Name seines Vaters war Shuddhodhana, der der König von Kapilvastu war. Der Name seiner Mutter war Maya Devi. Sie starb, als Gautama erst sieben Tage alt war. Es war seine Stiefmutter Gautami Devi, die ihn großgezogen hat. Er wuchs zu einem sehr sensiblen jungen Mann heran, dem das Wohl anderer sehr am Herzen lag. Sein Vater versuchte sein Bestes, um ihn am luxuriösen Leben des Palastes zu beteiligen. Er wollte nicht, dass der junge Siddhartha hinausging und das Elend der Welt sah. Aber die Geschichte sagt uns, dass der junge Mann mindestens dreimal mit seinem Wagenlenker Channa losgezogen ist. Siddhartha war sehr gerührt, als er einen alten Mann, einen Kranken und eine Leiche sah. Er wollte etwas tun, um die Menschheit von all diesem Elend zu befreien. Er dachte lange über dieses Problem nach. Als er schließlich einige Worte aus dem Mund eines Einsiedlers hörte, die ihn dazu ermutigten, der Welt zu entsagen, beschloss er, den Palast zu verlassen und zur Meditation in den Wald zu gehen. Bevor er ging, warf er einen bleibenden Blick auf seine geliebte Frau Yashodhra und seinen Sohn Rahul, die um Mitternacht einen tiefen Schlaf genossen. Er begann streng zu meditieren, um das Geheimnis von Leben und Tod zu kennen, und hielt lange Fastenzeiten ein. Schließlich erhielt er Erleuchtung unter dem Bodhi-Baum in Gaya.
