Description of the Artwork “Pilar Leaving Havana Harbor”

Ernest Hemingway’s 38-foot fishing boat named “Pilar” was built by Wheeler Shipbuilding in New York. “Pilar” was a nickname for Hemingway’s wife Pauline. Hemingway regularly fished off the boat in the waters of Key West, Florida, Marquesas Keys, and the Gulf Stream off the Cuban coast. In addition to fishing trips on Pilar, Hemingway contributed to scientific research which included collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution.

Each piece of my art has historical significance, so there is always a unique and fascinating story to tell about the painting. In today’s world of mass produced “sameness” there was a time when we created modes of transportation that were functional but also works of art. I take these unique and beautiful objects and place them where they were seen and shined in the past.
