I mixed and kneaded saw dust with acrylic paint to create a paste and sculpted to it to the canvas with my hands. I then took canvas I had ripped down to its individual strings and placed on the piece; I sourced the sawdust from local carpenters and woodworkers who would otherwise have thrown it away. With this material, I'm taking scraps and going on to create something of significance. Life is art and its through your process and with what you have and can find that you make your work of art. The canvas string was taken from a previous painting of mine.
My work revolves around materials and the artistic process. My intention is to allow the material to dictate the outcome of the piece and I deconstruct and decontextualize materials out of their typical or expected form. I blur the line between painting and sculpture, the 2D and the 3D. It is not enough for me to solely draw a line or paint a form, I have to physically manipulate it with my hands in a 3D space. I want to change the way people see the mundane through deconstructing resources like canvas, string, cardboard, and sawdust.
