Description of the Artwork “Odalisques”

An odalisque (which literally means female slave or members of a harem) has a long history in art. I attempted to approach this subject from the positive and light angle. My odalisques are dancing behind a semitransparent curtain of silk and, flirty looking at the viewer from over the curtain. The optimistic and easy going atmosphere of the artwork is highlighted by its golden and warm color palette. This artwork is from my “Women's Whims” series and to certain extent reflects to joyful and happy women that just flow through the life “dancing” and having fun, not taking it too seriously. This artwork is made with use of complicated techniques, including cold batik with salts, hot batik, and painting. This artwork is painted on the natural silk cloth with professional German silk paints, batik textile dyes, waxes, etc (KREUL Javana). The paint is water based, has no smell, and is fade and wash resistant (after fixing).

About the artist

One of the art critics called me “an artist of various textile forms” and I guess it’s true, as I devoted over 30 years to batik (a technique of painting on silk). In addition to creating art, I am also a professor at L’viv Academy of Arts (Ukraine), where I teach textile design, composition and history of textile. A direct contact with youth drives me to constantly search for new shapes, characters and topics that are getting reflected in my and my student’s artworks. I was born in L’viv, Ukraine in 1956. I seriously started to be interested in art at the age of 16. Despite my parents disapproval of my career choice I stood for my passion and pursued the artistic career. I graduated from L’viv Academy of Arts obtaining specialty of Textile Design. Since graduation I participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions home and abroad, whereas, my artworks may be found in private collections all around the world, from Germany to China and from Canada to Poland. My favorite material to work with is silk. Silk allows me express myself with desired speed, while reaching extraordinary effects that are impossible on canvas or paper. I use traditional techniques of cold and hot batik that are mostly popular in Western European countries such as Poland, Germany, Austria and France. In addition to batik artworks (mostly figurative), I would also like to present you some of my latest abstract works that are acrylic on canvas.
