Fine Art

Probably only a Frenchman could give this beautiful name to genuine art. The Frenchman is Charles Batteux, a clergyman, Professor of Rhetoric and Humanities at the royal college in Paris, who lived in the XVIII century. Batteux became the father of art philosophy. His work LES BEAUX ARTS, REDUITS AUN MEME PRINCIPE (Fine Arts, Reduced to a Single Principle) was published in 1746 in Paris.

It was him who first introduced the notion beaux arts (fine arts) as all creative impulses that are not reducible to utilitarian needs. This principle is simple. If an artist made a stool to sit on it, it is not beaux arts. However, if they painted the stool with a paintbrush on canvas, it is the object of fine art.

It is also essential that fine art paintings can cost much more than a simple stool. This French philosopher also attributed eloquence and dance to fine art.

What is Fine Art?

Starting from the Renaissance, this question was mostly answered through the process of elimination. To begin with, they decided that this is neither a craft nor a science. What then?

Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel associated this notion with painting, sculpture, poetry, music, and for some reason architecture.

In the 20th century the list was enlarged by adding folk art, photography and cinema.

Where to buy original Fine Art?

Starting from the Renaissance, this question was mostly answered through the process of elimination. To begin with, they decided that this is neither a craft nor a science. What then?

Nowadays, art theorists tend to believe that the concept of fine arts is outdated, because the modern art processes have outgrown the classical definitions of this notion. However, fine arts academies, as bastions of classical artistic values, still exist in the world.

You can buy fine art by modern artists on the Jose Art Gallery website.
