Ukrainian Cossacks saw themselves as knights, ie free people, whose way of life was determined by military craft and belonging to a clearly defined military organization. The main Cossack-knightly virtues were courage, bravery, loyalty, dignity, honor, good fame, ability to sacrifice, patriotism, knightly service, defense of the Fatherland and protection of the native faith. The Cossacks were unsurpassed masters of military affairs of their time.
