Kilat, France
Quillat/Kilat Eric Visual Artist Born in Marseille, lives and works in Bordeaux Kilat has been "making art" since 1984. After a brief stint at the Beaux-Arts and training in graphic design, it was on the street and through the practice of graffiti that he began to take an interest in painting and contemporary art. Kilat is recognized as the first graffiti artist in Bordeaux. Co-founder of the legendary and uncompromising Groupe INFLAMABLES, Kilat and his cohorts eventually carried out self-filmed "artivist" actions during international contemporary art events. In 2005, after a decade of video performances and pictorial abstinence, Kilat returned to painting "to see," revisiting the angry little characters of his early days. He then painted committed works on large tarpaulins denouncing the ills of humanity. The almost obsessive use of his filiform graphic characters—the "Kilat Touch"—allows him to experiment simultaneously with several plastic directions without betraying his identity or his approach. 2018 > Through a radical rejection of the figurative, Kilat decided to stop painting on the surface of the canvas and only on the edges. 2020 > Kilat draws inspiration from the dynamics of starling flocks, "Murmurations," to develop semi-abstract, semi-figurative works created by multiplying and layering thousands of small characters. 2025 > "Witness Walls" series. A return to radical abstraction. Kilat is inspired by the involuntary rhythm of paint traces on the walls of painters' studios.
