Description of the Artwork “Illiterate”

Automatic translation

This work approaches music as something widely read and used without knowing how to write or read it. It is like a language for illiterates, since it is mostly used and disseminated by those who cannot read or write it.

About the artist
Gabriel Rito

Gabriel Rito, Portugal

Self-introduction: Not wanting to bore you with what is least important, I am simply a self-taught Visual Artist (for various reasons), called Gabriel Rito, signing only “Rito”, which is what I am best known for (outside my family). In any case, it is, by choice, my artistic and professional name, and a nickname of which I am very proud. I inherited it, with great honor, from my Father, a huge entrepreneur (in his stature and in his time). As you can see (after working in the “Graphic Arts” field, from which I have naturally retired), my dedication to the “Visual Arts” (which was postponed for a long time due to my profession) has more to do with Creativity (the result of my always abundant and free imagination, combined with my deafness, which has a lot to say about it… and which forces creativity/“getting by”), or inspiration from something, than any school learning, the result of other people’s ideas (and I have nothing against it). Discovering; inventing; solving; creating, is what motivates me the most and what I can’t resist. (I wish I had the time and resources for everything…). I don’t follow any trend other than the one that comes from me. Certainly, due to my age (being an old man, born in 1952), I already have a CV of much experience; work; and, fortunately, the Arts (in which I have been navigating and participating, and through which I have learned a lot and evolved). But I don't want to show you my CVs. They are just some of the works that I really like and know how to do. I'm not going to present "criticisms". I don't have any, nor do I have the motivation to "gather" them. (It's not that you can't get "good" ones...). I want each person to see for themselves, just influenced by their own understanding and good taste. As with everything, Art has many applications. The best known is in Decoration. Nothing against it, quite the opposite. For all the reasons, one can acquire Art. It is acquired, mainly, through passion, or investment. After all, Art is, in fact, in everything. If it weren't like this, we wouldn't even know how to throw a stone, or we wouldn't even wear a loincloth... Art is the greatest of all motivations. No one practices it without madly enjoying it. Life begins with Art, and ends with Art. Intelligence without producing Art (even if it doesn't come to fruition...) doesn't exist. If we want, we all have Creativity. However, many only live comfortably thanks to It. Art is the most valuable thing there is. And, at the same time, it is what we devalue the most. We just need to not understand it... The truth is that Art is proof that we are intelligent. And, when I do it, I feel much more alive and useful. It is an enormous pleasure. Thank you for your attention. Gabriel Rito
