About the artist Matt Smith
Matt Smith is a self-taught wildlife portrait artist based in the North East of England who is available for private commissions specialising in pet portraiture and also produces a range of limited edition prints. Matt's passion is to capture wildlife in it's natural form and he loves to find the juxtapositions in his work - of the intricate, fine, delicate detail and the sweeping, dynamic, vibrant lines of free natural movement and form - of the play of natural light creating brightness and shadow on the body and eyes. In these contrasts he finds the character in his drawings, subtly and softly drawn out. Matt is inspired by capturing this character in his portraits. His love for the natural world and the great outdoors has been there since his early days spent holidaying in the Cumbrian Lake District National Park and Matt continues to spend a great deal of time in The Lakes and exploring the Northumberland Coast to find inspiration for his work. Matt finds the soul of his drawings both in the intricate detail and in the simple lines and movements that betray the feeling beneath the skin; of the jaunty angle of the head; the languid arch of the outstretched leg, the solid set of the chest!
